CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- President Obama walked in the steps of Nelson Mandela on Sunday as he visited the lime quarry where the civil rights icon once hunched in backbreaking work and the spare cell where he spent 18 years confined for fighting apartheid.

Obama’s tour of the prison at Robben Island was something of a symbolic union between the first African American president of the United States and the first black president of South Africa. The long-distance tribute would have to stand for a face-to-face meeting during Obama’s tour of Africa, as Mandela, 94, remained hospitalized in critical condition in Pretoria.

Mandela: South Africa's Emotional Roller Coaster

A group of children representing their Kindergarten came to lay balloons and flowers outside the Pretoria hospital where Nelson Mandela is being treated.

A week after his admission, these children pretty much represent the feeling of South Africa's millions.

Their teachers say children as young as two had heard their parents talking about the ex-president, who remains very ill, and wanted to see where he was resting.

Outside the hospital and Mr Mandela's Johannesburg home, people have been laying flowers and messages of support for Tata Madiba, his clan name now synonymous with this remarkable man's history but also with the new South Africa.

It is impossible to easily convey how important he is here.

Mandela Prayers have been held for 'Madiba'

"Let us all come together, hold hands all over the world, and let us call upon God so that he would heal President Mandela," Bishop Abraham Sibiya told reporters at the hospital while leading prayers with a group of clergy.

There has been very little for anyone to see since Mr Mandela was rushed to hospital in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

The visits of his family are filmed and relayed around the world instantaneously; teams of reporters and photojournalists are camped out around the hospital, which has a security screen of police checking all vehicles entering the grounds.

For a week the country has lurched from depression to optimism as reports of his condition have gone from serious to improving. It has been an emotional roller coaster.

This week has seen an incredible string of anniversaries marking important moments in Mr Mandela's life.

Exactly 55 years ago he married Winnie Mandela. This week marks the date when he was sentenced to life in prison, and this week also sees the anniversary of the 1976 youth uprising in Soweto where Hector Pieterson became one of the first children to be killed by apartheid forces.

Mandela in 'serious' condition in hospital

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela was in a "serious but stable" condition on Saturday after being taken to hospital with a recurrence of a lung infection, the government said.

The 94-year-old, who became the first black leader of Africa's biggest economy in 1994 after historic all-race elections, has been in hospital three times since December. He has been battling the infection for a few days, the government said in a statement.

"This morning at about 1:30 a.m. (2330 GMT) his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital. He remains in a serious but stable condition," it said.

Tension in South East over MASSOB sit-at-home order

Palpable tension pervades the five states of the South East, following today’s sit-at-home order given by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

The pro-Biafran group had ordered all Igbo across the country and in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi as well as Anambra states, to stay in their homes today, in protest of the killing of South easterners all over the country, especially in the North.

MASSOB also said that there will be no wedding, burial or any ceremony in Igboland today.

Reacting to this, the police has warned that any attempt to stop people from carrying out their legitimate duties would be resisted, while urging people in the South east to go about their normal businesses.

‘Why I don't discuss the paternity of my daughter - Omawumi

Omawumi opened up to Thisday entertainment contributor, Seun Opara, on the reasons why she does not like discussing the paternity of her daughter. She said:

I never hid my child's paternity but I felt that since I'm not married, I don't need to come out and say this is the father of my child. It is always ideal for someone who wants to marry you to be the one to identify himself. Another thing is that he might not want to identify himself because he is not an artiste. He might not want that part of my life. He might just love me and my child. So I like to respect people's privacy. I also strongly feel that it is my job as a musician to entertain you and if you feel like my personal life is your business, it doesn't mean I feel the same way.

No Bikini In This Year's Miss World Contest, To Appease The Muslim Community

This is a good case of if you go to Rome, you’ve got to do what the Romans do—and if you cannot do as such, make sure you do not upset them!

The popular Bikini catwalk of the Miss World Beauty Pageant has been axed from this year’s contest – so it doesn’t upset hardline Muslims in Indonesia where the 2013 competition will be held.

Since this is the first time the pageant is going to the Far East country, the organizers do not want to take chance with indecent exposure as they are wary of threats from religious zealots.

Usain Bolt beaten by Justin Gatlin in 100m in Rome

US sprinter Justin Gatlin beat six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt in the men’s 100 metres race at the Rome Golden Gala, Diamond League, which took place today. Justin beat Usain by one-hundredth of a second, that’s like 1% of a second. Justin actually had to dip his head over the line to win in 9.94 seconds. Usain came in 9.95.

Usain was making his first appearance in the Diamond League this season since his recent recovery from a hamstring injury. Usain explained what happened to him:

“I got the perfect start that I wanted, then about five steps in I stumbled a bit and that kind of threw my game off. My legs didn’t feel like my legs coming into the straight. I guess I need to do more strength work. I think I just need time to get it back together but the fact I got a good start threw me off. At least I got under 10 seconds.

”It is always a good thing to lose. You can figure how to step it up. I knew I wasn’t in great shape but I’m not worried. It takes time to get back into shape and I didn’t expect much from this race.”

Usain’s next race will be in the men’s 200m in next Thursday’s Diamond League meeting in Oslo.
