Obama visits Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned

President Obama looks out the window of Nelson Mandela's cell on Robben Island, where the anti-apartheid leader was imprisoned for 18 years, (Carolyn Kaster / Associated Press / June 30, 2013)
CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- President Obama walked in the steps of Nelson Mandela on Sunday as he visited the lime quarry where the civil rights icon once hunched in backbreaking work and the spare cell where he spent 18 years confined for fighting apartheid.

Obama’s tour of the prison at Robben Island was something of a symbolic union between the first African American president of the United States and the first black president of South Africa. The long-distance tribute would have to stand for a face-to-face meeting during Obama’s tour of Africa, as Mandela, 94, remained hospitalized in critical condition in Pretoria.

Mandela: South Africa's Emotional Roller Coaster

A group of children representing their Kindergarten came to lay balloons and flowers outside the Pretoria hospital where Nelson Mandela is being treated.

A week after his admission, these children pretty much represent the feeling of South Africa's millions.

Their teachers say children as young as two had heard their parents talking about the ex-president, who remains very ill, and wanted to see where he was resting.

Outside the hospital and Mr Mandela's Johannesburg home, people have been laying flowers and messages of support for Tata Madiba, his clan name now synonymous with this remarkable man's history but also with the new South Africa.

It is impossible to easily convey how important he is here.

Mandela Prayers have been held for 'Madiba'

"Let us all come together, hold hands all over the world, and let us call upon God so that he would heal President Mandela," Bishop Abraham Sibiya told reporters at the hospital while leading prayers with a group of clergy.

There has been very little for anyone to see since Mr Mandela was rushed to hospital in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

The visits of his family are filmed and relayed around the world instantaneously; teams of reporters and photojournalists are camped out around the hospital, which has a security screen of police checking all vehicles entering the grounds.

For a week the country has lurched from depression to optimism as reports of his condition have gone from serious to improving. It has been an emotional roller coaster.

This week has seen an incredible string of anniversaries marking important moments in Mr Mandela's life.
Jacob Zuma President Jacob Zuma has visited Mr Mandela

Exactly 55 years ago he married Winnie Mandela. This week marks the date when he was sentenced to life in prison, and this week also sees the anniversary of the 1976 youth uprising in Soweto where Hector Pieterson became one of the first children to be killed by apartheid forces.

Mandela in 'serious' condition in hospital

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela was in a "serious but stable" condition on Saturday after being taken to hospital with a recurrence of a lung infection, the government said.

The 94-year-old, who became the first black leader of Africa's biggest economy in 1994 after historic all-race elections, has been in hospital three times since December. He has been battling the infection for a few days, the government said in a statement.

"This morning at about 1:30 a.m. (2330 GMT) his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital. He remains in a serious but stable condition," it said.

Tension in South East over MASSOB sit-at-home order

Palpable tension pervades the five states of the South East, following today’s sit-at-home order given by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

The pro-Biafran group had ordered all Igbo across the country and in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi as well as Anambra states, to stay in their homes today, in protest of the killing of South easterners all over the country, especially in the North.

MASSOB also said that there will be no wedding, burial or any ceremony in Igboland today.

Reacting to this, the police has warned that any attempt to stop people from carrying out their legitimate duties would be resisted, while urging people in the South east to go about their normal businesses.

‘Why I don't discuss the paternity of my daughter - Omawumi

Omawumi opened up to Thisday entertainment contributor, Seun Opara, on the reasons why she does not like discussing the paternity of her daughter. She said:

I never hid my child's paternity but I felt that since I'm not married, I don't need to come out and say this is the father of my child. It is always ideal for someone who wants to marry you to be the one to identify himself. Another thing is that he might not want to identify himself because he is not an artiste. He might not want that part of my life. He might just love me and my child. So I like to respect people's privacy. I also strongly feel that it is my job as a musician to entertain you and if you feel like my personal life is your business, it doesn't mean I feel the same way.

No Bikini In This Year's Miss World Contest, To Appease The Muslim Community

This is a good case of if you go to Rome, you’ve got to do what the Romans do—and if you cannot do as such, make sure you do not upset them!

The popular Bikini catwalk of the Miss World Beauty Pageant has been axed from this year’s contest – so it doesn’t upset hardline Muslims in Indonesia where the 2013 competition will be held.

Since this is the first time the pageant is going to the Far East country, the organizers do not want to take chance with indecent exposure as they are wary of threats from religious zealots.

Usain Bolt beaten by Justin Gatlin in 100m in Rome

US sprinter Justin Gatlin beat six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt in the men’s 100 metres race at the Rome Golden Gala, Diamond League, which took place today. Justin beat Usain by one-hundredth of a second, that’s like 1% of a second. Justin actually had to dip his head over the line to win in 9.94 seconds. Usain came in 9.95.

Usain was making his first appearance in the Diamond League this season since his recent recovery from a hamstring injury. Usain explained what happened to him:

“I got the perfect start that I wanted, then about five steps in I stumbled a bit and that kind of threw my game off. My legs didn’t feel like my legs coming into the straight. I guess I need to do more strength work. I think I just need time to get it back together but the fact I got a good start threw me off. At least I got under 10 seconds.

”It is always a good thing to lose. You can figure how to step it up. I knew I wasn’t in great shape but I’m not worried. It takes time to get back into shape and I didn’t expect much from this race.”

Usain’s next race will be in the men’s 200m in next Thursday’s Diamond League meeting in Oslo.

Soldiers in northern Nigeria have uncovered a hidden arms cache that authorities there believe belonged to members of the Lebanese militant movement Hizbollah.

Officials showed journalists the weapons, which they said soldiers confiscated from under the master bedroom of a home in Kano, the north's largest city. The weapons had been packed into small coolers and concealed under several layers of concrete, the military said in a statement.

The arms, later shown on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority, appeared to include badly corroded rocket-propelled grenades, landmines, hand grenades, assault rifles and magazines. Some of the weapons appeared to have been charred.

80 Year Old Man Becomes Oldest To Successfully Conquer Mount Everest

An 80-year-old Japanese man on Thursday became the oldest man to reach the top of Mt. Everest, officials said.

Yuichiro Miura reached the top of Everest Thursday morning with his physician son Gota, mountaineering official Gyanendra Shrestha said from the base of Everest.

Miura’s achievement eclipses that of a Nepali man who climbed Everest at age 76 in 2008.

The oldest woman to climb Everest is also a Japanese. She was 73 when she reached the top last year.

Miura broke his hip in an accident two years ago, and he underwent heart surgery in January.

“I am still healthy and strong. I think I have a good chance to reach the summit of Everest,” he said via phone earlier this month.

Nigeria: Goodluck Jonathan declares emergency in states

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has declared a state of emergency in three states after a series of deadly attacks by Islamist militant groups.

The military will take "all necessary action" to "put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists" in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, he said.

Mr Jonathan also ordered more troops to be sent to the north-eastern states.

Militants from Boko Haram have been blamed for most of the violence, which has left 2,000 people dead since 2010.

The Islamist group, whose name means "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language, is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state in the north.
Nigeria - a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people - is also affected by a spate of conflicts over land, religion and oil.

Man wrongly told he had terminal brain cancer wins $60K settlement

after hearing the grim diagnosis, the man went out to enjoy what was left of his life, spending his entire life savings in the process. However, months past and the man was still alive and well, as it turned out that he did not have brain cancer. The man filed a lawsuit against the hospital seeking to recover the money he spent.
Now, a judge has ordered the Fort Harrison VA Medical Center to pay about $60,000 to the man who was wrongly diagnosed with brain cancer and told he had only months to live.

U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy ruled that Mark Templin and his family’s suffering was caused by negligence on part of the hospital.

Molloy’s decision noted that in the months of which Templin thought he was dying, he quit his job, sold his truck, celebrated his last birthday, bought a prearranged funeral and contemplated suicide. His son-in-law also built a box for his ashes.
It turns out that Templin had suffered several small strokes.

“I can’t imagine the pain this man and his family went through believing that he will die shortly. The judge did the right thing by making the hospital pay for their grave mistake,” Heather Alvarez, 22, of Helena, Montana told  after learning about the judge’s ruling.

“It’s hard to put a price on the anguish of a man erroneously convinced of his imminent death,” Molloy wrote. “Templin lived for 148 days under the mistaken impression that he was dying of metastatic brain cancer,” the judge continued.

Glo Picks Omawumi, Others As New Ambassadors

Music stars Omawumi Mgbele, Waje, M.I and Naeto C have been unveiled as new brand ambassadors for the telecommunication giant, Globacom, P.M.NEWS can reveal.

This ends speculations about who and who would make up the new set of entertainers to represent the fastest growing network, just as some old ambassadors were dropped.

Omawunmi-237x336

Other artistes said to have put pen to paper at the telecoms company’s headquarters in Lagos are Tiwa Savage, Lynxx, Flavour, Burna Boy and Bez Idakula.

P.M.News learnt that the new ambassadors were heavily compensated with mouth-watering endorsement fees ranging from N10million to N20million annually. And their deals cover an initial two years, subjected to renewals.

Already Omawumi, Waje, Lynxxx and Flavour have been showcased in the Glo’s Mobile Number Portability campaigns on newspapers and radio commercials. Others like Naeto C, Bez and Tiwa Savage are being expected to follow suit. And in a matter of weeks, the face of these new Glo ambassadors will dot a lot of billboards nationwide.

With these latest ambassadors, it will bring the number of new artistes engaged as Glo ambassadors to 10. The masked-Afrobeat star, Lagbaja, a few weeks ago joined the likes of P-Square and Sammie Okposo who have signed a deal with them a long time ago.

Also still on board are comedian Basketmouth and some Nollywood stars such as Funke Akindele, Nonso Diobi, Nuhu Aliu and Odunlade Adekola.

For Waje, this could be described as a double blessing. The Glo mouth-watering deal came up few days after she launched her much talked about debut album. “I am so grateful to God for this deal. It shows that more blessings are still coming my way. As for what I will do with the money, it is strictly my personal business,” said Waje who posted on Instagram her goody bag and fingers painted in Glo lemon green colour.

Burna Boy, (Damini Ogulu) was the first to drop the hint of the deal on 3 May via an instagram message that reads: “New Glo deal sweeter Dan a bxxx!!!”. It was followed by a tweet message from his label boss @PeediPicasso: “Album done….Merchandise looking good…Major deals closed”.

Burna Boy, who is yet to release any album, was said to have received an endorsement fee of around N10-15million, alongside goody bag that contains smartphones loaded with airtime and data package.

Though it cannot be officially confirmed yet, P.M.News learnt that some Nollywood stars may have been dropped as Glo ambassadors due to some issues that contradict the telecommunication company’s brand value. This has made the brand to switch over to less controversial, young and vibrant music stars.

Sir Alex Ferguson retires after 27 years as Manchester United manager

Sir Alex Ferguson will retire as Manchester United manager at the end of the season in the 27th year of a tenure that has made him the most successful in British football.

While he will become a United director and ambassador, the executive are now charged with having to appoint the successor to a man who has won 13 league titles, two Champions Leagues, the Cup Winners' Cup, five FA Cups and four League Cups. In February, Ed Woodward, the incoming chief executive, said there was plan in place for when the Scot did step down.

Regarding his decision, Ferguson said: "The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time. It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long- term future of the club remains a bright one.

"Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world. Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both director and ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future. I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich. In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.

"Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy chief executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.

"To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."

The sudden nature of Ferguson's departure is in keeping with how the Scot stated he would leave the post after he trailed a first retirement during the 2001/2 season before performing a U-turn.

It is understood he gathered the players in the first team changing room shortly after they arrived for training at Carrington on Wednesday morning. In an emotional speech he announced he was to step down. He then took his backroom staff aside before finally addressing the rest of the staff in the canteen.

Any successor to the Scot would be required by the club to have extended experience of managing in the Champions League, as well as expertise in handling a large budget and squad. These criteria would appear to rule out David Moyes, the Everton manager, with at least one senior executive unsure about his candidacy, despite Ferguson being an admirer – though earlier in the week bookmakers slashed the odds on him joining United, possibly as member of the backroom staff, this summer.

Other managers who may be of interest to United would include Real Madrid's José Mourinho, though he appears favourite to take over at Chelsea, Jurgen Klopp, whose Borussia Dortmund team are in the Champions League final, and Malaga's Manuel Pellegrini.

Ferguson will be a strong voice in any replacement for him and whether he would endorse Mourhino is unclear. When Charlton, a United director and one of those instrumental in bringing Ferguson to the club from Aberdeen in 1986, was asked last year if the Scot admired the Portuguese, he said: "He doesn't like him too much, though."

It is thought that Mourinho's histrionics and the temporary nature of his career in which he has consistently moved around clubs is not considered desirable by United. However, he has claimed league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain and has twice won the Champions League – the same count as Ferguson.

While United will be keen to replace Ferguson as soon as possible, the club will not be rushed with the ideal scenario being that the next manager should be appointed before the three week summer tour to Australia, Japan and the Far East in early July.

Joel Glazer, joint chairman of the Manchester United board, said: "Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he's also a wonderful person. His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable. I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow.

Avie Glazer, his brother, said: "I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the club as a director. His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future."

David Gill the outgoing chief exectutive, said: "I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years – through the treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings.

"We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition.

"Alex's vision, energy and ability have built teams – both on and off the pitch – that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.

"The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years.

"What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten. It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend."

First-team coach Rene Meulensteen revealed how Ferguson broke the news to his backroom staff on Wednesday morning. "(I found out) this morning when I came to the club," he said on Sky Sports News. "He called us into his office and he said what decision he took. It's always been on the cards - there's speculation every season. I think the manager kept his cards close to his chest. I think he felt the time was right now and he made a decision.

"He's obviously a man who thinks very, very well so I'm sure he's taken a lot of thought into making this decision. I wish him well. He's been fantastic for this club and I hope all the fans give whoever's going to come in the same support that he gets."

Obama, visiting Mexico, shifts focus from drug war

MEXICO CITY — Against the backdrop of a deadly drug war and shifting security cooperation, President Obama joined his Mexican counterpart, Enrique Peña Nieto, here Thursday to promote economic integration, trade and jobs.

The two leaders sought to emphasize a U.S.-Mexican partnership committed to growth, education exchange and a strengthened border, minimizing the dominant position that fighting drug cartels has occupied in recent years.

Yet the topic was unavoidable. Obama acknowledged that the Mexican government was "organizing a vision" on how to reduce violence, a strategy that is expected to limit the U.S. participation in Mexican security affairs that had flourished under the government of former President Felipe Calderon.

"We anticipate there is going to be strong cooperation," Obama said in a joint news conference, perhaps alluding to fears in Washington that apparent retrenchment by the Peña Nieto government might ease pressure on violent cartels. His comments seemed aimed at reassuring those doubters.

Obama added, however, that the U.S. would "interact" with Mexican agencies in "any way that the Mexican government deems appropriate."

Peña Nieto's administration has begun to restrict broad U.S. involvement in some counter-narcotics and other security operations, perhaps signaling the end of a period of close cooperation in law enforcement and intelligence. The shift is already causing tension with Washington.

Mexico's youthful, telegenic president has promised broad reforms in education, banking and energy, as well as a strengthened federal government. U.S. officials are monitoring how these changes affect American interests.

It was Obama's fourth visit to Mexico as president, but his first with Peña Nieto as president. Peña Nieto assumed office in December, returning his Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, to power after a 12-year hiatus. The PRI ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century.

"We have agreed the relationship between Mexico and the United States should be multi-thematic," Peña Nieto said in the news conference at the National Palace in downtown Mexico City after the two presidents met in private for about an hour.

Earlier, Mexican officials and a military honor guard greeted Obama on the tarmac when he landed at Mexico City's airport. His motorcade then zipped through normally snarled streets to the palace, a hulking 16th century building in the center of the capital. The palace faces the vast Zocalo plaza, which is usually teeming with people but had been blocked off for most of the day as a safety measure.

Obama's trip is aimed at highlighting economic progress and potential in Latin America, not security or immigration.

In a speech to Mexican students Friday, Obama is expected to continue to emphasize themes such as increasing educational exchanges, increased trade opportunities and the reform package Peña Nieto has successfully moved through Mexico's Congress.

The portrait of a Mexico "on the rise," as one U.S. official put it, is disputed. Not all economic indicators are so rosy. Mexico's economy grew by a scant 1% in the first quarter of 2013, and economists have slashed growth estimates for the year by about half. Already, Mexico's economy was growing at a pace well below the regional average.

In addition, violence continues to haunt much of the country, with drug cartels dominating many regions. And a vote-buying scandal involving the PRI is threatening Peña Nieto's efforts to build the political consensus necessary to pass more reform measures.

Still, an upbeat message on Mexico serves Obama's top domestic priority: passing an overhaul of immigration laws through the U.S. Congress.

More than half the immigrants in the U.S. who crossed the border illegally or overstayed their visas are Mexicans. If Obama can assure U.S. lawmakers and their constituents that the poverty and violence in Mexico that caused illegal immigration are easing, he may have an easier time winning support for the bill.

"Economic development in Mexico will also ultimately get at the root cause of illegal immigration to the United States, so that's another benefit of the economic growth underway in Mexico," said Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security advisor to Obama.

Obama will take a similar message to Costa Rica on Friday and Saturday, when he will meet with several Central American leaders.

Obama is hugely popular in Mexico — his approval ratings eclipse those of Peña Nieto — but a presidential visit is always a magnet for protest, and a few demonstrations were planned for Friday.

Mexicans complain that American politicians have done little to diminish the voracious demand for drugs north of the Rio Grande, have failed to stop the sale of weapons that have fueled the bloodletting in Mexico, and have neglected to seriously address the laundering of drug money.

"Does President Obama come here to commit himself to such debates, vital to destroying the root of narco-trafficking, or only to tell us that our role in the relationship is to subordinate ourselves to them?" a leading Mexican newspaper, El Universal, said in an editorial Thursday.

Asked at the news conference about his recently failed attempt to pass gun control, Obama pledged to "keep working on it."

Obama and Peña Nieto were to have a small working dinner later Thursday. The two men, about the same age, are said to have developed a rapport.

But what many Mexicans see as a disastrous drug war — which claimed about 70,000 lives in six years, led to the disappearances of thousands more and mired security forces in serious human rights abuses — was a policy very much promoted by the United States. The new Mexican government clearly wants to change the strategy, and Washington remains anxious to hear exactly how.

"In essence, Obama is coming to see if his worries [about security cooperation] are warranted or not," commentator Ana Paula Ordorica wrote in the Excelsior newspaper. "In this context, the challenge for the Mexican government will be to make clear that, yes, there is a [security] plan, and move on as quickly as possible to other themes."

The anti-50 things to do list

NOTHING fills a mum of an 11-year-old with more feelings of inadequacy than reading a list of 50 things her 11-year-old should have already done.

Umm, on reading the inventory, compiled by the UK's National Rust, I mean National Trust, 'from rolling down hills to bird watching and damning a stream' I fear that unless we were Amish, only a few of the 50 can be struck off our list.

Yes, a tree has been climbed by the kid but not without knees, legs and arms scratched and vows made never to climb one again. Although rolling down a really big hill was fun. For me, anyway.

Yes, the son has certainly camped out. But I left that for him to do with his dad.

'Build a den'? I mean what are we, The Brady Bunch? Who has a 'den' anyway, apart from Mike Brady?

Yes, we've skimmed stones, run around in the rain and flown a kite but as for catching a fish with a net, my kid doesn't plan on being a professional fisherman at this point, so the bung, reel-less rod had to make do.

As for eating an apple straight from a tree - after the pesticides are wiped off perhaps we have - but as for playing 'conkers', a quick google search told me it is only applicable if living in Britain.

Of course we have gone on a really long bike ride, not before both of our legs were wobbly with exhaustion and playing a new Xbox game was a less strenuous alternative.

Making a trail with sticks, a mud pie and damning a stream haven't quite figured in our small inner-city courtyard but thank god we can tick off the 'Play in the snow' must-do. Phew.

My child has yet to set up a snail race, for fear the RSPCA may come knocking and while he has created some brilliant 'wild art' his was more school project than time-consuming past time.

I'm not even going to ask what playing a 'Pooh stick' is and as for jumping over waves, yes, we can tick that one off. A lot.

Picking blackberries growing in the wild and exploring the inside of a tree would be great, if both were nearby, but luckily 'a visit to a farm' has been made possible thanks to the support of generous friends with farms.

I mean, what kind of parent would let their kid go on a walk, barefoot? What of the syringes, broken glasses and crap that festoons our streets?

Who has really made a grass trumpet or hunted for fossils and bones?

Okay, we have been star gazing, climbed a huge hill, explored a cave and held a scary beast. Well, it was a baby Sumatran tiger, held in a controlled environment, if that counts.

My boy has hunted for bugs, and usually eaten them but the hunt for frogspawn continues. In hope.

He has caught falling leaves, usually because I am sweeping them off the roof so they don't block our drains but as for tracking wild animals, discovering what's in a pond and making a home for a wild animal, well we don't live far from Sydney's inner nightlife, so we see all of that enough.

We have checked out 'the crazy creatures in a rock pool' and caught crabs (in the water, I mean) but as for 'bringing up' a butterfly, I've had an exciting enough time bringing up a child, let alone a pupa or two.

Yes, we have been on nature walks at night - often coming home from grabbing dinner at the local Japanese down the road - and we have attempted 'plant it, grow it, eat it', but we somehow haven't gone past the planting bit.

Of course we have swum in the sea, oh UK National Trust we are Australian! although the closest we got to building a raft was watching Tom Hanks do it in Castaway.

We've watched birds - well, my son is 11 and is starting to notice girls - while finding his way with a map and compass is easy. It's called Google Maps!

Rock climbing, cooking on a campfire and learning to ride a horse have all been happily ticket off the list - a total feeling of parental incompetence has slowly lifted - but as for finding a geocache. Let me just Google that.
